Background

  • Instituted in 1954, the Padma Awards are among India’s highest civilian honors.
  • Announced annually on Republic Day (January 26).

Objective of Padma Awards

  • Recognizes distinguished achievements in various fields contributing to public service.

Padma Award Categories

  • Padma Vibhushan – Exceptional and distinguished service.
  • Padma Bhushan – Distinguished service of higher order.
  • Padma Shri – Distinguished service.

Note: Padma Vibhushan is the highest in the hierarchy.

  • Art, Social Work, Public Affairs, Science, Engineering, Trade, Medicine, Literature, Education, Sports, and Civil Service.

Eligibility & Selection Process 

✔️ Open to all individuals regardless of race, occupation, or gender.
Government servants (except doctors and scientists) are not eligible.
🔹 Normally not conferred posthumously (except in highly deserving cases).
❌ The award does not confer a title and cannot be used as a prefix or suffix.

Who Can Nominate?

  • Central Ministries, State/UT Governments, Bharat Ratna & Padma Vibhushan awardees.
  • Institutes of Excellence & Citizens (including self-nomination).

Who Decides the Padma Awards?

  • Padma Awards Committee – Constituted by the Prime Minister annually.
  • Recommendations approved by the Home Minister, Prime Minister, and President of India.
  • Awards are presented at Rashtrapati Bhavan in March/April each year.

Founder of Sattriya Akademi, Alok Shilpi Sangha, and Pragjyoti Kala Parishad.
